Abdullah Miniawy Trio

Chiesa San Nicolò l'Arena, Chiesa San Nicolò L'arena, Catania

Curation

10/5/2026

On May 10, 2026, Kadmonia and Associazione Musicale Etnea will host Abdullah Miniawy, performing in trio with Robinson Khoury and Jules Boittin, at the Chiesa di San Nicolò l'Arena. They will present Peacock Dreams (2025).

Miniawy is an Egyptian poet, vocalist and composer based in Paris, working across experimental music, performance and political writing. His practice moves fluidly between contemporary jazz, electronics and improvisation, bringing a deeply expressive voice rooted in tradition into dialogue with contemporary forms.

In this trio configuration, he develops a distinctive “three-tenor” setup, where voice and trombones engage in a close, volatile conversation. Drawing from Egyptian vocal traditions, the music unfolds through a charged interplay of baroque counterpoint, extended brass techniques and a declamatory vocal approach inspired by classical Arabic poetry.

The pieces, drawn from Peacock Dreams, take shape as invocations—poems delivered in classical Arabic with the intensity of Qur’anic recitation and Sufi prayer—while the brass instruments sculpt a tense and shifting sonic field around the voice.

The result is both devotional and contemporary: a powerful synthesis of baroque, operatic and Sufi elements, intertwined with urban and mystical echoes, shaping one of the most compelling avant-garde works of recent years.
