Francesco Messina

Composer, designer and historic figure of Italian electronic music.

Francesco Messina is a composer, graphic designer and visual artist whose work has shaped the language of Italian electronic and avant-garde music since the late 1970s. A central figure of the Cramps Records era, he was part of the milieu that gathered around Franco Battiato, Juri Camisasca and Roberto Cacciapaglia — a generation that fused minimalism, electronic experimentation and a distinctly Mediterranean lyricism.

His 1983 album Prati Bagnati del Monte Analogo, co-signed with Raul Lovisoni, has been re-evaluated in recent years as a foundational work of Italian ambient music, reissued internationally and cited by a new generation of producers and listeners. His later catalogue, including Medio Occidente and Reflex, continues to explore the porous boundary between composition, sound design and visual culture.

Parallel to his musical practice, Messina has worked for decades as a graphic designer and art director, shaping the visual identity of records, books and cultural institutions. This double practice — sound and image — informs everything he makes: each release is a complete object, where the cover, the typography and the music belong to the same world.

Francesco Messina is in management with Kadmonia for live projects, reissues and special commissions.
